FAQ:
Here are some answers to Frequently Asked Questions we receive, if you do not see the answer to a question you may have please contact us.
Do I need a referral from my Doctor?
If you will be using your insurance coverage, then yes, you generally require a doctor's note. To be sure, ask your employer or phone your insurance company to ask, not all companies require it. If you are not using insurance coverage and are paying for the massage yourself (out of pocket), you do not need a doctor's note.
Who should receive Massage Therapy Treatments?
Massage Therapy is appropriate for individuals of all ages, including infants, children, and the elderly; however, there are some conditions for which massage therapy is not appropriate. A qualified Massage Therapist (RMT or MT) is trained to recognize these cases. Our Massage Therapists treat a variety of injuries, diseases and disorders such as back and neck pain, headaches and migraines, stress and anxiety, carpal tunnel, tendonitis, sprains and strains, arthritis, sciatica and fibromyalgia, or groups of people such as athletes, performers, women during pregnancy (including labour and delivery), infants and children. When booking your first consultation, please be sure to tell us if you have any specific injuries, conditions or diseases so that we can treat you safely.
How do I pay for Treatment?
We are able to bill most insurance companies directly. We do NOT bill motor vehicle claims or WSIB. For all others we accept Interac or E-Transfer, or cash then you will be issued a receipt that you may submit to your extended health care plan or claim on your personal income taxes.
How often do I need Treatment, and how long will I need to keep going for Treatment?
It depends on the individual and their particular condition. Generally, in acute injuries, Massage Therapy is most beneficial when used over a series of treatments and then followed up with maintenance or preventative treatments. For example, if you had a work place injury, you may need to come two-three times per week for about 8 weeks before decreasing treatment to once per week and then once per month or as needed. On the other hand, if you are looking for stress relief or relaxation, once every 4-8 weeks may suffice.
Factors such as pain level, finances, insurance coverage and your body’s healing time will affect your decision. After going over your health history with you and treating you, your therapist can give you a recommendation as to how often they think you should come. Ultimately it is your decision.

How long should my appointment be?
Again, the decision is ultimately yours. However, for your first appointment, we recommend one hour. This gives your therapist time to go through your health history as well as perform any necessary assessment and testing, while still allotting a fair amount of time for hands on treatment. This will also give your therapist a chance to see what areas require more focused work. If you think you would like a full body massage, it usually takes one hour or more. If you would like us to concentrate on a specific area only (i.e.: just neck and shoulders or just lower back), then a half-hour could be sufficient.
We offer; 30, 45, 60, 75 or 90 Minute treatment lengths. Please let us know at the time of booking how long of an appointment you would like. Click here to see a list of our pricing.

What should I wear to my appointment?
You can wear as much or as little clothing as you wish. Whatever makes you feel the most comfortable. A sheet will cover you at all times, uncovering only the area being worked on. Most people just wear their underpants, some prefer to wear nothing, some women leave their bra on, some people bring shorts, and others are fully clothed. It really is up to you. Generally, a lubricant (cream or oil) is applied to the skin to allow the therapists hands to glide smoothly over the area being treated. This is why removal of clothing is suggested (but not mandatory). Your Therapist will work within your comfort level to make you feel relaxed and comfortable during your treatment.
Do I always have to see the same Therapist?
It is up to you. You can always see the same therapist or you can switch at any time. One therapist may have a schedule that is more compatible with your own or they may specialize in a certain treatment or modality which makes them more appealing to you and your particular condition. We are happy that you have chosen the Fergus Massage Therapy for your health care needs and you will not offend us if you prefer to switch to another therapist. What should I expect during my first visit?
On the first visit you will complete a confidential health history as part of your assessment. This is important as the Massage Therapist needs to know if you have any medical conditions or are taking any medications. The Massage Therapist will listen to your concerns, assess your individual needs as well as other factors that may be contributing to your injury (lifestyle, nutritional status, etc.). The Massage Therapist will then develop a treatment plan with you to ensure you receive appropriate treatment that will help you return, as much as possible, to your normal activities.
We will describe the treatments to be provided to ensure that you are comfortable with it. Your consent is sought before treatment is provided. If you are uncomfortable, your RMT wants you to let them know immediately, whether that discomfort involves the treatment, draping or any pain you may experience.
Be sure and discuss the most effective means of treatment with your Massage Therapist.
