Tendonitis and Repetitive Strain Injuries
Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) is a term used to describe a range of painful conditions in the tendons, muscles or other soft tissue. RSI is usually caused by a certain part of the body doing a repetitive motion. RSI is usually related to a task or occupation and unlike most injuries will take longer than normal for the strain to heal. The symptoms are pain, tightness, throbbing and dull aches.
Tendonitis is a common repetitive strain injury usually because a tendon is overused or overworked (see Strains and Sprains). The tendon becomes inflamed, irritated or suffers a small tear. Tendonitis causes pain in the tissue surrounding a joint and can be red, swollen and warm to the touch. It can happen all over the body, in the shoulder, elbows, knees, wrists, and ankles.
Massage therapy is beneficial to the treatment of tendonitis and repetitive strain injuries because it can help relieve the pain and increase mobility in the effected joint as well as speed up the recovery time.
